Cottage Garden 2011

I'd noticed that one of my most popular posts was on my cottage garden, after looking at that post, I'm embarrassed looking at those photos! 5 rose bushes, 13 hydrangeas, plenty of daises, and lots of other stuff later--here it is this year!

I'm a little upset, my hydrangeas have not bloomed this year. I've gotten a few blooms off of the ones I most recently planted, but nothing from the ones I planted last year.

Don't look, I know, I need to edge..... The periwinkle has grown in nicely. It should bloom again here soon!

I'm using a antique cast-iron cauldron with a busted bottom to coil the hose in. I'd wanted one of those fancy hose containers from the store, and came across this one for $5.00!

There's a bloom. That's one of the neub hydrangeas.

Some vintage chairs greet you on the porch, along with some stray leaves.

I used what concrete edging I had to create a whimsical curved shaped border. You can also see where I stacked a smaller bird bath in a larger one to create the look of a tiered fountain.

I nearly lost two rose bushes to powder mildew. I had to spray and spray and cut them wayyyy back, but now they are doing fine!

However, you can tell by the dead plants, that I can't keep salvia alive! The poor things. I wish my flagstone walkway looked that good in person! It's all wonky and has bare patches of sand in real life! I love what you can crop out of a photo.

I planted this whole flowerbed earlier this Spring. It is growing in nicely, I just wish the grass would grow back where it's supposed to, and not in the flowerbed.

Lavender, roses, and mint--let's just say this part smells really good! I lost a bit of the mint from scorch, but it is still thriving. I've been using it as a substitute for basil in lots of recipes, including pesto--it is fantastic. I'm a little bummed, though, my lavender has yet to bloom! Any hints on this??

The lavender is growing like crazy, just no blooms! What am I doing wrong? Anyone in Blogland have experience with lavender?

[Edit: Thank you for all your tips, etc. regarding my lavener. Several of you have suggested that it is another plant; however, it is Lavender, Stoechas Silver Anoek.

This Spanish lavender creates a scene with large violet 6" flowers and fragrant, bright silvery-green foliage. As flowers shift to lighter purple, wings appear to float around it.]

I've let the periwinkle and wild strawberry vine take over as ground cover--the birds love it! I really love how it has made this bird cage look like it grew there.

The impatients have really done well this year--that is a HUGE washtub full of them that started from three very small plants! I got all of my gazing balls at the Habitat ReStore! Can't beat a buck each!

You can really see the nifty curved shape I gave to the flowerbeds. I only had to buy a few more pieces of the concrete edging, as I had tons of it from the previous owner.

More impatients, plus you can see how well the ivy topiaries have grown in!

I hope you have enjoyed this quick tour of my garden! I'm still on cloud nine from being featured in the September 2011 Romantic Homes magazine as a COVER STORY!!!! Woohooo! If you haven't picked one up yet, please do so ASAP! eShop (beta) opens tomorrow!!!

Mikey!
Your yard looks amazing.
I love your iron cauldron. Perfect hose holder!
Hydrangeas can be stingy on flowering those first few years, I know what you mean!
Thanks for sharing your lovely yard.
The ferns are awesome too!

Not sure, this summer is hotter than usual, and my roses are taking a bit of a lay back. I need to fertilze and water more I guess...my salvia is doing great though!

Your garden looks great, Mikey. My own is full of weeds as I write. I have worked way too many hours this year and did not get to do nearly the plantings I have done other years. I "think" hydrangea might bloom on last year's wood? Not sure but you could google it. I know the AnnaBelle hydrangea blooms on NEW growth but I think some of the other ones bloom on old growth.

When I planted lavender I got healthy growth for two years and then it started blooming profusely. Don't overwater though- wait til they are dry to rewater.

Great post- You have done a wonderful job, Mikey! Hugs- Diana

Drat- I did s nice long comment, went out to pick up some things from outside because there is a storm blowing in and lost my comment- I HATE when that happens.

I said that some hydrangea bloom on new wood (like AnnaBelle) and other varieties bloom on old wood. I'm not sure which you have. My lavender grew profusely for two years before it started blooming and then was a showpiece. I don't suppose you want to know that MyHero pulled it out thinking it was a weed. Unfortunately, shooting a spouse is illegal in the state of WI!;>)

Your gardens are just beautiful. I can tell you've put a lot of love and energy into them. Beautiful post~ xo Diana

Are you over watering the lavender? That could be one problem.
I have one that I rooted from a plant , its very small but has 2 blooms on it. I have it in sort of sandy soil. I mixed some sand in with the dirt I used. I know I will have to feed it eventually but not over do it. Your garden looks so nice. Love it. One season sure makes a difference, yours has taken off very nicely.

Lavender grows well in my garden and blooms profusely. It bloomed even in its first year. I never fertilise it, it likes a poor sandy soil, and not too much water - although real lack of water will cause problems. Has yours really got silver leaves? Maybe it is a particular variety and bred for the leaves and doesn't flower well?

I too noticed that the leaves on the lavender are very silver. I have not seen that variety. I have easily grown lavender in rich rocky soil, where it grew fast and furious, blooms every year and regular water in full sun. Now it's in clay/ adobe ( or should I say clay/concrete) it's not growing as fast, but growing and blooming.
I love how passionate you are for your garden, it's lovely. I too have a love for mint.
I just wrote a post on getting good deals on plants, but you are probably already aware, as an avid gardener.

Hi Mikey! Thanks so much for linking up at Home Savvy today! Your garden is beautiful and your pictures make me feel like I just took a stroll through it. About your lavender, mine never blooms the first year. Is it the first year you have had it in? Most perennials put most of their energy into growing their first year and then grow much larger and bloom much more the second year. Also, my lavender didn't bloom at all until September last year. Good luck! :)

I have two hydrangeas that I grew from bare root. It took years before I had flowers. Last year I had hardly any blooms and this year more. I can never get salvia to grow either. My coreopsis and lavendar are insane. Unfortunately I got the wrong kind of lavendar. I wanted the kind that has darker leaves. My soil is clay and I rarely fertilize so I should be lucky I have anything. Another plant I have that goes insane is False Heather. I'm going to cut that back this fall. Where I live lots of our gardening is done in the fall.

I really like the trees flanking the stairs. And I know what you mean about the hydrangeas...mine struggled so badly this year w/o the rain. They really just need that electrified shock of rainwater w/ a little lightning in it sometimes!

What a lovely garden to gaze upon, as you sit on your porch!! Lavender likes full, hot sun (the sunnier, the better) and good drainage. If it gets too much shade = no flowers. :(

Get hold of me next time you have a rose issue. I will help you grow roses you can write home about!
